Celebrating Matariki

We celebrated Matariki (Maori New Year) by taking part in lots of fun activities like planting, kite making and cooking.
Matariki is the Maori name for a group of seven stars known as the Pleiades.  Some people think of Matariki as a mother star with six daughters, and it is often referred to as the Seven Sisters.  Matariki appears in the eastern sky around the shortest day of the year.  We worked as a team, to make roasted kumara to share with our whanau (family).
Did you see Matariki in the sky, while you enjoyed eating the kumara?

Peeling the kumara.

Liam chops the kumara ready for washing.
Blake and Matthew are great peelers!

Sophie is concentrating really hard!
Matthew adds the notice to his kumara pack

Mmmmm... the kumara smell yummy!

Aayush is putting his kumara in the tin foil.

Kapa Haka!!

Room 12 loves singing, dancing and learning Te Reo when we go to Junior Kapa Haka on Tuesday afternoons.

Whaea Tearani has been teaching us greetings, days of the week and parts of the body.  The girls sing sweetly and the boys do Ka Mate fiercely like the All Blacks.  Tino pai rawa Room 12!!

Arts Week

In Week 6 Sunnyhills School took part in an Arts Week celebration.

We visited teachers in other classes to take part in drama, visual art and music activities.  During lunchtimes we watched teachers, students and other visitors to the school perform or share their art.  We visited Mrs Dowden the Music Specialist at Sunnyhills and had fun with bubbles, balloons and musical instruments. We joined in with the Story Teller who visited the Junior School.  We looked at the amazing Wearable pieces of artwork created by a local artist. In our class we used clay to make creatures we might find in our edible garden.
Arts Week was fun!!
